ItemAware combines high-end enterprise RFID readers and enhanced smartphones, with cloud infrastructure to provide a seamless solution. They were stuck with an external RFID vendor platform that wasn’t scalable. To meet ItemAware’s scalability requirements they wanted to build their own platform that would allow them to expand their services and meet the needs of their existing client base.

ItemAware changes the way companies manage their inventory. By automating those processes on a mobile device or desktop, they are able to help clients predict issues, reduce theft, and flag items that need repair before they can interrupt the work cycle. Their RFID tracking platform saves their clients time and money on outdated processes and puts them towards profitable goals.
The external RFID platform that ItemAware was using was not being invested in, and therefore wasn’t scalable - and by this point was already failing to meet client demand. To meet the needs of ItemAware’s client base, they wanted to build their own solution that would scale and allow for them to grow or add features over time.
ItemAware did not have mobile or web developers who were experienced with newer technologies and needed an external team who had that knowledge. They were challenged with knowledge of both hardware integration and cloud integration, working in tandem.
The platform requires streams of big data from hundreds of scanners to be filtered into groups of what is important to the client. This large amount of data was not something that their external vendor could support, limiting ItemAware’s ability to meet client needs.
Interviews with users, ItemAware’s existing development team, and competitive benchmarking were conducted. FM also conducted package research and technical spikes, to find out which existing 3rd party tools and technologies could solve the challenges.
Wireframes were created and decisions were made about which technologies ItemAware should build with. FM compiled a feature list for the MVP and put together a product roadmap for its building, outlining when each step should take place.
FM delivered high-fidelity mockups of the MVP, with detailed acceptance criteria, a backlog, and diagrams of the technical architecture. Proof of concepts for room scanners and hand-held scanners were also provided.
For the database and backend server development, FM cooperated with ItemAware’s inhouse team. Otherwise, FM took lead on all frontend web development and created the overall backend architecture. The project was Agile, working in 2-week sprints.
FM supported deployments of pilots for smaller clients in the healthcare industry, as well as large scale deployments. Also, FM teams are “on-call” for when ItemAware is ready to add any major modules in the future.
FM designed and developed a scalable, sophisticated asset tracking platform along with an inventory scheduling software product for ItemAware.
The user-focused components developed for iOS, Android, and web, enable multi-modal scanning (RFID, Barcode, Manual), sophisticated asset tracking and inventory scheduling, dashboard analytics, reporting, and more.
Workflow management, complete with task assignment, notifications & alerts ensure efficiency and transparency. While this is beneficial for those who are responsible for daily tracking, it also benefits managers who can track productivity and quickly identify issues.
ItemAware had successful large deployments with clients, like US governmental agencies and manufacturers, who had been using their previous platform.
Successful productization of ItemAware’s platform means they have been able to see adoption within major industries while expanding into new ones.
Innovations, like combining antennas with RFID tags have adopted a number of large enterprise customers looking to make a switch.
ItemAware boasts that they are helping their clients achieve 98% reduction loss in prevention costs and a 54% decrease of reduction error costs.
